Elaine Strobridge Forbes was born in Newark in 1928 to Earl and Marie Strobridge, lived on Wilson Street, was a cheerleader at Newark High School (then on MIller Street), brought her new family with husband Robert Wheeler Forbes to Charlotte Street, and then lived for over 45 years on the house they built on Grace Avenue. She was the heart and talent of the Forbes family business Arcadia Florists during the 1970's and 1980's on Main Street, provided unflagging dedication as the Executive Director of the Wayne County chapter of the American Cancer Society, and volunteered countless hours to the residents of the DeMay Living Center.

This colorized and digitally-enhanced photo is based on a black and white snapshot taken circa 1945.

In 1944, Elaine was attending Newark Senior High School on Miller Street (now the Kelley Middle School) and her brother Stro (Maurice Strobridge) was in the military service.

The first two photos were taken in the Strobridge back yard on Wilson Street. The photo on the far right was at an archery meet in Syracuse with Barb Davidson, Elaine, and Sally Hallagan.

1945 was the start of her senior year in high school. Another casual snapshot in the back yard and the Cheerleading Squad at Coburn Park: (front) Mary DiSanto, Virginia Albanese, Don Vanderbrook, Sarah (Sally) Hallagan, (back) Pat Richmond, Elaine, Martha Douglas.

1946 was a momentous year for Elaine, as she graduated from Newark Senior High School and left her role on the Head Cheerleading Squad. To the left: Sarah (Sally) Hallagan, Elaine, Laura Yarborough, and Martha Douglas.

Although very much a hometown girl, she moved from home to enroll in Cortland State Teachers College, now State University of New York (SUNY) at Corltand. (See photo at lower right.)

She did not stay on the bench for long..

She made new friends, as shown in the photo to the right: Elaine, Joan Duff, Doris Dalby, Willia Athoe, and Mim Herbst. With Millie Cerferati (middle photo) she joined the Tri Sigma Sorority where she stayed during the later part of freshman year and during summer school of 1946 and 1947.

And she ended up in the middle of the cheerleading squad, as shown in this 1947 yearbook photo (far right.) After summer school of 1947, she returned to Newark for good. Within two years, she would meet Robert Wheeler (Bob) Forbes through a friend at Emmons Company, which evolved from a nursery business to jewelry in the parent organization C. H. Stuart. They were married on September 9, 1950, in the Newark Methodist Church.
